Why was a peaceful settlement of differences not possible between the Colonies and Great Britain by 1776?

Colonist where under the rule of Great Britain and had to follow the laws of the "crown", meaning they had to pay the same taxes as other Englishmen, however the colonist felt it was wrong as they had no representation in parliament. Cha-Cha.
