The Auburn Tigers football team represents Auburn University in the sport of American football. The Auburn Tigers compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

The West Virginia Mountaineers football team represents West Virginia University (also referred to as "WVU" or "West Virginia") in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of college football. Dana Holgorsen is WVU's current head coach, the 33rd in the program's history. West Virginia plays its home games on Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium on the campus of West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. The Mountaineers compete in the Big 12 Conference.

It was through college football play that American football rules first gained popularity in the United States.
The Virginia Tech–West Virginia football rivalry was an American college football rivalry between the Virginia Tech Hokies football team of Virginia Tech and West Virginia Mountaineers football team of West Virginia University. West Virginia University and Virginia Tech met 51 times between 1912 and 2005 with 33 consecutive seasonal matchups from 1973 to 2005. The two teams played as conference foes from 1991-2003 as members of the Big East Conference (1979–2013). The Black Diamond Trophy was the trophy that annually went to the winner of the game. It was introduced in 1997 and was meant to symbolize the Appalachian region’s rich coal heritage (the phrase "black diamond" is often used as a term for coal.)
Virginia Tech held the trophy in 6 of the 9 years in which it was contested, but West Virginia leads the series 28–22–1. The last game was played on October 1, 2005, in Morgantown, West Virginia. Virginia Tech won 34–17.
ESPN Major League Baseball is a promotion of Major League Baseball on ESPN and ESPN2, with simulcasts on ESPNHD or ESPN2HD. ESPN's MLB coverage debuted on April 9, 1990 with three Opening Day telecasts. ESPN Major League Baseball is guaranteed to remain on air until 2021. Starting in 2014, ESPN will return to broadcasting postseason baseball. ESPN has rights to any potential tiebreaker games (Game 163) and one of the two wild card games (Turner Sports receiving the other game).
The title is derived from the fact that it may come on a night when ESPN doesn't have a scheduled game (i.e., Tuesday, Friday, or Saturday). The different weekly regular season games that ESPN presents (as of 2007): Sunday Night Baseball presented by Taco Bell, Monday Night Baseball presented by USAA and Wednesday Night Baseball presented by Goodyear, and formerly ESPN DayGame presented by Fruit of the Loom and Thursday Night Baseball powered by Castrol.
West Virginia i/ / is a U.S. state located in the Appalachian region of the Southern United States. It is bordered by Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, Ohio to the northwest, Pennsylvania to the north, and Maryland to the northeast. West Virginia is the 41st largest by area and the 38th most populous of the 50 United States. The capital and largest city is Charleston.
West Virginia became a state following the Wheeling Conventions, in which 50 northwestern counties of Virginia whose landowners owned few to no slaves decided to break away from Virginia during the American Civil War. The new state was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863, and was a key Civil War border state. West Virginia was the only state to form by seceding from a Confederate state and was one of two states formed during the American Civil War (the other being Nevada, which separated from Utah Territory).
