The Janitors were an alternative rock/Noise rock band from Sunderland & Newcastle, formed in 1984.

They were led by singer Andrew Denton, who was backed by Craig Hope (guitar, keyboards), Pete Crowe (bass guitar), and Tim Stirland (drums). Described as "a mixture of Membranes meeting Captain Beefheart, they signed to Marc Riley's In-Tape label, releasing their debut single, "Chicken Stew" in July 1985. It went on to reach the top 10 of the UK Independent Chart. In anticipation of the single's release, Denton and Hope moved to Newcastle to recruit bassist Simon Warnes, however Crowe took his place.

Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is a labor union representing about 1.9 million workers in over 100 occupations in the United States (including Puerto Rico), and Canada. SEIU is focused on organizing workers in three sectors: health care (over half of members work in the health care field), including hospital, home care and nursing home workers; public services (local and state government employees); and property services (including janitors, security officers and food service workers).

SEIU is the fastest growing labor union in the United States and has over 150 local branches. It is affiliated with the Change to Win Federation and the Canadian Labour Congress. SEIU is based in Washington, D.C., and has several internal divisions which include: Communications, Government Affairs, New Media, Organizing, Political, Global Strength, Pension/Benefits, Community Strength, Research, and Legal.

Justice for Janitors (JfJ) is a social movement organization that fights for the rights of janitors (caretakers and cleaners) across the US and Canada. It was started in 1985 in response to the low wages and minimal health-care coverage that janitors received. Justice for Janitors includes more than 225,000 janitors in at least 29 cities in the United States and at least four cities in Canada. Members have fought and continue to fight for better wages, better conditions, improved health-care, and full-time opportunities. The movement utilizes its extensive memberships as well as prominent leaders in the communities to accomplish its goals.

The Justice for Janitors campaigns are organized under a larger union: the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). SEIU has almost two million members and is a significant part of the labor movement. SEIU is an asset to the Justice for Janitors campaign as it organizes members as well as trains them in necessary workplace skills such as language proficiency. SEIU is also a substantial part of the labor movement in that it retains constructive partnerships with the corporations employing the janitors to ensure that these corporations receive no negative impact due to the campaigns.
