The Northwestern Wildcats are the athletic teams that represent Northwestern University, a founding member of the Big Ten Conference and the only private university in the conference. Northwestern has eight men's and eleven women's Division I sports teams. The mascot is Willie the Wildcat. The athletic director is former Northern Illinois University Athletic Director Jim Phillips, who took office in April 2008.

Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q) is Northwestern University’s first overseas campus. Founded in partnership with Qatar Foundation in 2008, NU-Q is located in Education City, Al Rayyan, Qatar. NU-Q offers a liberal arts and media education with undergraduate degrees awarded in communication and journalism. NU-Q graduated its first class in spring 2012.

Evanston is a suburban municipality in Cook County, Illinois, United States, 12 miles (19 km) north of downtown Chicago, bordered by Chicago to the south, Skokie to the west, and Wilmette to the north, with a population of 74,486 as of 2010. It is one of the North Shore communities that adjoin Lake Michigan. The boundaries of the city of Evanston are coterminous with those of Evanston Township – although school districts 65 and 202 take in a small portion of eastern Skokie. Evanston is the home of Northwestern University.
